A list of 5 million GMail addresses and passwords were recently published on a Russian bitcoin forum. Security experts say that the source was most likely from a phishing attack rather than Google being hacked. The list appears to be old. There is no need to panic, but there is a lesson. Password security is very important.

Here are some things you should always do:

  • Change your password if you haven't recently
  • Use a unique password for each site. Never use the same one for different sites.
  • Make your password contain a mixture of capital letters, small letters, numbers and punctuation.
  • Don't use obvious passwords like your name, date of birth, dog's name, football team etc.

Keeping track of dozens of could defeat the best mnemonists in the world. Use a password manager for that. Apple computers have Keychain built in for you to use. There are password managers out there such as LastPass, KeePass & 1Password. These allow you to manage passwords over multiple devices.

Get a password manager and start changing your passwords to unique and hard to crack passwords right now.
